How long does it actually take to sell a car in the UK?

‘How quickly can I sell my car?’ is the single most common question we get. The honest answer is ‘it depends entirely on how you sell it’ — the gap between the fastest option and the slowest is weeks rather than days. Here's a realistic timeline for each route.

Private sale: 2 to 8 weeks

Listing on Auto Trader, eBay or Facebook Marketplace is the slowest route. A typical timeline:

  • Day 0: photograph the car (ideally in good light, in a clean state), write a listing, post it.
  • Days 1–7: messages start coming in. Expect time-wasters, no-shows, and one or two serious enquiries.
  • Days 7–28: viewings and test drives. If the price is right and you respond quickly, you may get an offer in this window.
  • Days 28–56: if you haven't sold by now, you'll probably need to lower the price.

The Auto Trader 2025 used-car index put the average time-to-sell on their platform at around 27 days. That's the headline. The reality is that popular makes/models in good condition sell faster (often within a week); unusual cars, high mileage, or anything over £15k typically takes longer.

Dealer part-exchange: same day

If you're buying a new (or new-to-you) car from a dealer, part-exchanging your existing one happens on the same day you collect the new one. They value the car, deduct it from the new car's price, and that's that.

This is the fastest route, but it almost always nets you the least money — 15–25% below private sale value is typical, and you're committing to buy a specific car from that specific dealer.

Online buyer (like Carmora): 24–48 hours

This is the middle ground. With Carmora:

  • Hour 0: enter your registration on our home page, give us a few details and photos.
  • Within 24 hours: a real person comes back to you with a valuation — by phone or email.
  • If you accept: we book a collection slot that works for you, typically within 2–7 days.
  • Same day BACS: payment hits your account on collection day, often before we pick the car up.

What slows things down

  • Outstanding finance: settlement quotes from lenders sometimes take 2–3 days. Get yours early.
  • Missing paperwork: no V5, no ID, mismatched address — all add days.
  • Mid-week vs weekend: collection slots in the South of England tend to fill faster than the North; book ASAP.
  • Bank cut-offs: BACS payments initiated after about 2pm typically land the next working day.

How to sell as fast as possible

  1. Have the V5, MOT certs and any service history ready before you contact the buyer.
  2. Get a finance settlement figure if there's outstanding finance — early.
  3. Take clear photos in daylight: front, back, both sides, interior, dashboard with the engine on (to show miles + warning lights).
  4. Be flexible on collection day; offering ‘any time this week’ rather than ‘Saturday only’ helps.
