Selling a prestige or sports car? Why a specialist buyer usually beats the algorithm

If your car is a 2020 Audi RS4, a Porsche Cayman, a Range Rover Sport with a few tasteful options or any of a hundred similar prestige cars, the standard online buying services will almost certainly underprice you. Sometimes by a lot. Here's why — and what to do about it.

Why algorithmic buyers struggle with premium cars

The big ‘we buy any car’ services run on algorithms. Algorithms work brilliantly on cars with thousands of comparable transactions every month — the Ford Fiestas, Vauxhall Corsas, Volkswagen Polos of this world. There's so much data they can spit out an accurate price within £100.

Premium and performance cars are the opposite. There might be 40 transactions a month nationally for a specific spec of Audi S5, fewer for a Cayman in the colour and trim yours happens to be. The algorithm sees thin data, defaults to caution, and the quote comes out 10–20% below fair retail.

Add the on-the-day downgrade most algorithmic services apply (kerbed alloys, age-related marks, tyre tread) and the gap widens further. By the time the BACS lands, you're often well into ‘would have been better selling privately’ territory.

What a specialist hand-pick buyer does differently

The other end of the spectrum is a specialist dealer who buys hand-picked stock for their own forecourt, rather than running cars through a wholesale auction. Their economics are different — they're buying to retail, not to flip. That means:

  • They know exactly what your specific model, trim and colour will sell for in their part of the market.
  • They factor in genuine option value (panoramic roof, B&O audio, ceramic brakes, factory exhausts) rather than ignoring them.
  • They're not pricing for auction-house margin plus refurb plus profit — they're pricing for retail margin only.
  • They want the right cars, not all the cars, so they pay properly to land them.

An example of how this works in practice

A good example is Carter & Haines in Rossett, Wrexham — a family-run prestige specialist who deliberately doesn't buy from auctions. They explain on their site that every car is hand-selected from private sellers and via the Carmora buying network, which gives them transparency on history and provenance for cars in the Audi / BMW / Land Rover / VW / Cupra space. That model means they're paying private-sale-level prices because they want the specific car, not a generic 2-year-old hatchback.

Because they take the time to retail the car properly — full service history, full retail preparation, HPI checks — they can pay closer to retail value, which means the seller gets more.

How to find a specialist who actually pays

A few markers of a good prestige buyer:

  • They sell what they buy. If their own forecourt is full of cars like yours, they need stock and they'll bid for it. If their forecourt is full of 5-year-old Corsas, you're talking to the wrong place.
  • They buy by appointment / inspection, not just by reg. Anyone willing to drive out and look at the car is going to value it more accurately than someone typing a reg into a webpage.
  • They don't sell to auction. If they're buying to wholesale, you're getting an auction price minus their margin. If they're buying to retail, you're getting closer to retail minus a smaller margin.
  • They're transparent about the price breakdown. Ask them what they think it'll sell for, what their reconditioning budget is, and what their margin is. A confident specialist will tell you.

Where Carmora fits in

This is exactly what Carmora is built around. We're not a forecourt ourselves — we're the network that connects private sellers with specialist hand-pick dealers like Carter & Haines (and several others in the prestige space). When you enter your reg on our home page, the valuation comes from people who actually want your specific car.

That's the practical answer to ‘why is this prestige car worth more here than at one of the big algorithmic services?’ — because the buyer at the other end is paying retail-minus, not auction-minus.
