Do I need a service history to sell my car in the UK?
No — you don't legally need a service history to sell a car. Plenty of cars sell every week without one. But the lack of one will cost you money, and how much depends on the buyer.
How much is service history worth?
As a rough guide:
- Full main-dealer service history (FSH/FDSH): typically adds £500–£1,500 to a £10,000 car, more on higher-value models.
- Independent service history (ISH): similar to FSH on cars over ~5 years old; slightly less impact on newer cars where buyers expect dealer stamps.
- Part service history: covers most of the service intervals. Worth maybe 70% of the full-history premium.
- No service history at all: knocks 5–15% off the value, more on premium cars (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche) where buyers expect documentation.
If you have some records, gather them
Even partial records help. Things that count:
- The service book with stamps in it
- Digital service records (most modern cars have these — your main dealer can print one off for ~£20)
- Receipts and invoices from independent garages
- Cambelt change receipt (this is the single most important one on most cars — buyers will deduct £500+ if there's no proof)
- MOT history showing the car was being maintained (advisories addressed, etc.)
If you have nothing
You're not unsellable, but you'll get a more conservative price. A few things help:
- Get a service done before selling. A £180 service at an independent garage may add £400+ to the price.
- MOT history is your friend. The MOT history on gov.uk shows the mileage at each MOT — which proves the car wasn't sitting in a field for five years.
- Be honest about it. A buyer who finds out later that you hid the lack of records is going to feel cheated and may try to back out. Disclose upfront and the buyer can price accordingly.
